COMPASS

Compass is a response to the increasing density of the middle ring suburbs of Melbourne. Drawing upon the concept of ‘life cycle’, Compass is grounded in the principles of liveability and adaptability within a future-proof and socially responsible design.

A flexible floor plan evolves with its inhabitants’ lives. Interventions range from simple bifold door systems to a self-contained ‘granny flat’ typology. Orientated to the north, each apartment has a dual aspect and a generous, private outdoor space or ‘void’. These ‘voids’, along with roof terrace planting, provide each apartment with distinctly private areas while Compass’ general arrangement, central green space, and communal amenity in the basement foster a sense of community and social engagement within the building.

Future-proofing principles are primarily addressed through the naturally lit, fully sealed basement ‘carpark’ which contains communal workshop spaces, efficient services for a self-sustaining building, communal laundry, and adaptable car spaces.

The stepped, low-rise profile of the overall building form is a low-impact addition to the existing streetscape with minimal overshadowing.

These principles ensure that Compass caters for all stages of life through enhanced and flexible amenity, and responds to the urgent call for higher density in Melbourne’s middle ring.
